As AI becomes more common in education, one important development is often overlooked: AI designed specifically for schools.<\/span><\/p>\n

A good example is Teachers.is<\/a> – a platform created to support teaching and learning in a school context, not for general use.<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes it different?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Most AI tools (like general-purpose chatbots) are designed for a wide audience. They are flexible, but not always aligned with school realities.<\/span><\/p>\n

School-customised AI works differently:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Built for education: Tools like Teachers.is are designed around curricula, classroom tasks and assessment needs.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Safer environment: They usually follow stricter rules on data protection and student use.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • More predictable outputs: The system can be guided to produce responses that match educational expectations (e.g. CEFR levels in language learning).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Teacher control: Teachers can adapt or monitor how the AI is used.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    How is this different from general AI tools?<\/span><\/p>\n

    General AI tools (including systems like ChatGPT) are:<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Trained on very broad data<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Not tailored to a specific curriculum<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Less controlled in terms of output and level<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Not designed with school policies in mind<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      They are powerful and flexible, but they require more teacher mediation.<\/span><\/p>\n

      In contrast, school-tailored AI is:<\/span><\/p>\n

      • Easier to integrate into lessons<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Designed with students (and schools) as primary users<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Why this matters for L2 teachers<\/span><\/h3>\n

        For language teachers, this distinction is especially important. School-customised AI can:<\/span><\/p>\n

        • Adapt language level: Tasks and texts can be aligned to students\u2019 proficiency (e.g. A2, B1).<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Support specific skills: Writing, speaking or interaction tasks can be scaffolded.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Provide controlled practice: Activities can be designed to focus on particular grammar or vocabulary.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Reduce risks of over-reliance: The tool is structured to encourage guided learning rather than simply generating answers.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Fit classroom realities: Tasks can be linked directly to what students are learning in class.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
