A Synthesis of
Research Findings
Using AI to Teach and Learn languages
The emergence of AI has prompted a significant amount of scientific research into its potential applications in education, including both promising developments and harmful impacts. The purpose of this publication is not to add yet another scientific paper to the ongoing debate.
The aim is much more modest: to review the literature from the perspective of a foreign language teacher trying to understand how our field is changing so rapidly. And synthesise the findings to make it easier for other educators to navigate this vast landscape. See if this publication may serve you as a useful starting point at the outset of this journey.

Most foreign language teachers already use AI in some way, often without realising that there are many other possibilities that could significantly enhance their teaching. If you mainly use AI tools to create learning content, you may overlook other useful functions that support speech processing or assessment. If you rely on generic tools available in the public domain, you may miss out on tools tailored to building specific language skills.
This encouraged us to map out a typology of AI-assisted language teaching activities, including those used for lesson preparation and those conducted with students in the classroom. See if this map helps you discover new areas of support.

Task-based Language Teaching
with AI Support
Having outlined the field of AI in language education and the areas of possible support we move on to concrete scenarios of task-based language teaching. How can AI facilitate learning content development and enhance students’ critical awareness of its value; how to give a new impetus to student practice and interaction; how to make language learning more accessible and adapted to various levels; how to streamline feedback and assessment?
We cannot offer one-size-fits-all answers to these questions. But the Guide’s exemplary teaching scenarios may inspire you to plan your own activities for your classroom.
