For those not familiar with the portal:

Ludum Dare is a video game development competition. It was first held in April 2002. Participants are required to create a video game that fits within a given theme in two or three days. A unique feature of this competition is that participants often release a time-lapse video of the development of their game.

During a Ludum Dare, developers from around the world spend a weekend creating games based on a theme suggested by the community. Ludum Dare events take place every April, August and December.

The Jam is the Ludum Dare event for everyone. Teams, individuals, anyone that wants to come out and make something. You can work alone or in a team. You create a game in 72 hours. You’re free to use any tools or libraries to create your game. You’re free to start with any base-code you may have.

The Compo is Classic Ludum Dare. Compo games are created entirely from scratch by one person, in just 48 hours. This is the ultimate test of your game creation skills. You must work alone (solo). Your game and all your content must be created in 48 hours. Source code must be included. You’re free to use any tools or libraries to create your game. You’re free to start with any base-code you may have. At the end, you will be required to share your source code.

Whether you’re participating in the Jam or the Compo you’ll need to host your game somewhere. The kind of hosting you need varies depending on if you’ve made a web or desktop game.

The Compo also requires you to supply your source code, so you’ll need to host that as well.
