Most students find it difficult to understand the different artistic vanguards and their main characteristics. One of the reasons is because it is not common among families to visit museums and appreciate works of modern art. Yet, Modern Art is a main subject of different syllabuses: History, Culture and Arts History; Philosophy. So, to tackle this difficulty, the History teacher tried a new approach of the subject under the Erasmus + TEAARS project.
Here are the main steps of that new approach:
1 – A lesson plan related to museums and modern art was outlined.

2 – Motivating students: “Let’s play with museums” .
The students were invited to look around museums with the help of the Internet, having our suggestions been The National Gallery, London, and Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. Then, they would have to pick their favourite painting and send an e-mail postcard to the teacher and friends with the chosen picture.

3 – Challenging students: Students enjoyed the activity, so the teacher launched a challenge: “What about creating your own virtual museum? You can choose the building, the rooms’ decoration, the paintings and other works of art, the virtual public and also upload music”.
4 – Come and visit my virtual museum: Students accepted the challenge and created their virtual museums, related to the topic they were studying and according to their own interests.

Students’ involvement in the activity exceeded our expectations, especially, students at-risk.
As we find it was a good practice, we are now sharing our experience. We hope it has interested you and that you may try it out with your own students. We are certainly going to repeat this type of activity with other students.
